Well Kaitlyn's stem cell harvest is first thing tomorrow morning (thursday 9/29), what a way to spend her 5 month birthday. They have to put another line in her groin area because her hickman line is not wide enough. They are not sure if she will be coming home that day or if we will have to do it again on Friday. I'm expecting to have a couple of long days, as we will be in the PICU for this.
I do have a couple of questions if anyone can help.
Will this be painfull for her? that is my biggest concern. although she is so little, it will be to hard to tell.
thanks for any input you have had and may have..

Although my Ben was almost 4 when his was done, i wouldn't say he was in a lot of pain. He was put to sleep to have the line put in, and the biggest problem was he had to lay flat and still, so someone had to be by his side the whole time and although they thought they would get enough. it took 3 days. 6 hours each day. We were in the hospital anyways, so they took him downstairs each morning, we brought lots of movies. He had to be flat 24/7 for the 3 days until the line came out so I would recommend a sheepskin underneath her as the bed sores can be bad, the hospital should have one. Any other questions just drop me a line. Good Luck\

Kate had her stem cell harvest when she was about 9 months old. They put a line in her neck and it was in for about 3 days. I don't think it was comfortable but Kate is one tough cookie and didn't complain. She was the first one at our hospital to have a stem cell transplant so they were unsure of what the best method was. In the end her line in the neck had clotted so they used her hickman line. It was a shame that Kate was the first so she had to have the line in her neck but now all the children at our hospital use the hickman for stem cell collection. I guess someone has to be the first. On Kate'w web site is a picture of her during her collection. she is drinking a bottle and doesn't look to uncomfortable. :) Good luck and we are praying for miss Kaitlyn. Karrie\
